A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BOOK OF ACTS CHAPTERS 1 AND 2

Spreading The Word Without Saying A Word Ministry
By: Chico and Debbie Jimenez

The Book of Acts is an account of how the church is supposed to be. In order to get a better understanding of these two chapters from the Book of Acts, we will use other verses to connect the dots.

Acts 1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach.

The Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance definition for treatise:
3056. logos log’-os from 3004; something said (including the thought); by implication, a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (i.e. Christ):–account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say(-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.

Jesus started preaching / teaching the Gospel in Mark 1:15.
Mark 1:9- And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.  And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:  And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.  And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto Him.

Mark 1:14-15 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Acts 1:2-3 Until the day in which He was taken up, after that He through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen:  To whom also He shewed Himself alive after His passion {crucifixion} by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

Remember, the Apostles did not have to wait in the upper room to receive the Holy Ghost; the Apostles, other than Thomas, received the Holy Ghost on the day of Jesus’ resurrection according to scripture.

John 20:19-22 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them,Peace be unto youAnd when He had so said, He shewed unto them His hands and His side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again,Peace be unto you: as My Father hath sent Me, even so send I you. And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and saith unto them,Receive ye the Holy Ghost.

John 20:24-25 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.  The other disciples therefore said unto Him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe.

John 20:26   And after eight days again His disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and saidPeace be unto you.

John 20:27-29 Then saith He to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing.  And Thomas answered and said unto Him, My Lord and my God.  Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

John 20:30-31  And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this bookBut these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.

Acts 1:4-5 And, being assembled together with them {both Jews and Gentiles} commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, whichsaith Heye have heard of Me.  For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence

Acts 1:6-7 When they therefore were come together, they asked of Him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?  And He said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power{Before the Holy Ghost was received}

Acts 1:8-9 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

Acts 1:10-11 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.

He was speaking of the Rapture in Acts chapter 1 vs 9 and vs 11 when he said 9″He was taken up; and a cloud received Him ”  11″shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven“.

Jesus will come back for His church in the clouds, we will meet the Lord in the air.   1 Thessalonians 4:16-18  For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Acts 1:12-14 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.  And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brethren.

Acts 1:15-17
 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)  Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

Acts 1:18-19
 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

Acts 1:20-21
 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.  Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us.

Acts 1:22-23 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that He was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of His resurrection.  And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

Acts 1:24-26 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.  And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

The Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance definition of nation1484. ethnoseth’-nos;
a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):–Gentile, heathen, nation, people.

So we can clearly see that both Jews and Gentiles received the Holy Ghost in the upper room that day.

Acts 2:6-11 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.  And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?  Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,  Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God

Did you notice that the Holy Ghost DID NOT have anybody speak some wild utterances? He gave them all the ability to speak and understand the same language.

Acts 2:12-13  And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?  Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

Acts 2:14-16 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem{we just read that Gentiles also dwelled in Jerusalem, so Peter is addressing both Jews and Gentiles}, be this known unto you, and hearken {listen} to my words:  For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

The prophet Joel was prophesied of the Holy Ghost being dispensed after the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:17-21 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all {chosen} flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:  And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:  The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Acts 2:22-24 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:  Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Acts 2:25-28 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for He is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:   Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:  Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

Acts 2:29-30  Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.  Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.

These verses confirm that Jesus is from the seed of David. John 7:42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?  2 Timothy 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel.
Romans 1:3  Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.

Acts 2:31-33 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that His soul was not left in hell, neither His flesh did see corruption.  This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.  Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

Acts 2:34   For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,  Until I make thy foes thy footstool.

Acts 2:36   Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?  {Both Jews and Gentiles}

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, REPENT, AND BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST.  Jesus said in Mark 16:16  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 2:39-40 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.  And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

Notice in the NEXT verse, who was it that got baptized in the Name of Jesus? THEY THAT GLADLY RECEIVED HIS WORD WERE BAPTIZED.
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?  Jesus said in Mark 16:16a  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.

The people spoken of in Acts 2:41 DID obey the gospel, they believed and then they were baptized.

Acts 2:41 THEN THEY THAT GLADLY RECEIVED HIS WORD WERE BAPTIZED: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

WHAT WAS THE APOSTLES DOCTRINE?  1 Corinthians 1:23   But WE PREACH CHRIST CRUCIFIED, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness.

The True Gospel is foolishness to them that ARE NOT chosen unto salvation.

Acts 2:43-44 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common.

Acts 2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Acts 2:46-47 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,  Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Did you catch that? The Lord added to the church daily
