When Were The Apostles Baptized? The answer to this may surprise you!

John 13:1-4 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him;  Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside His garments; and took a towel, and girded Himself.

John 13:5-7 After that He poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded. Then cometh He to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto Him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

The Apostles did NOT yet realize that Jesus was baptizing them.

John 13:8 Peter saith unto Him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with Me.
Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance definition for: wash

 nipto nip’-to to cleanse

In other words, If one is NOT cleansed they CAN NOT be part of the family of Jesus.

John 13:9-10 Simon Peter saith unto Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.  Jesus saith to him, He that iswashed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance definition for: washed
3068. louo loo’-o a primary verb; to bathe (the whole person)

In other words, “One who has bathed all over needs only to have his feet washed to be entirely clean. Now you are clean—but that isn’t true of everyone here.”

John 13:9-12 For He knew who should betray Him; therefore said He, Ye are not all clean.  {ALL WERE CLEANSED EXCEPT JUDAS} So after He had washed their feet, and had taken His garments, and was set down again, He said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

The Apostles still DID NOT understand that Jesus had baptized them, He could NOT have baptized them into His death, because He was still alive.

Romans 6:3-5 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His deathTherefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection.

John 13:13-15 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

Jesus gave the Apostles the example of washing their feet as a symbolic example to baptize all that believe on Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

  • Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and BE BAPTIZED, AND WASH AWAY THY SINS, calling on the name of the Lord.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:11   And such were some of you: BUT YE ARE WASHED, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
  • Ephesians 5:26-27 That He might sanctify and CLEANSE IT WITH THE WASHING OF WATER BY THE WORD, That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
  • Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and OUR BODIES WASHED WITH PURE WATER
  • Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy HE SAVED US, BY THE WASHING OF REGENERATION, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
  • 1 Peter 3:20-21 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, EIGHT SOULS WERE SAVED BY WATERTHE LIKE FIGURE WHEREUNTO EVEN BAPTISM DOTH ALSO NOW SAVE US (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Apostles were no exception to the rule of being washed/cleansed through symbolic baptism, “If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me“.

The morning of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave…

John 20:13-17 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid Him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing Him to be the gardener, saith unto Him, Sir, if thou have borne Him hence, tell me where thou hast laid Him, and I will take Him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto Him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.  Jesus saith unto her, Touch Me not; for I am not yet ascended to My Father: but go to My brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God.

John 20:18-22 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things unto her. Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when He had so said, He shewed unto them His hands and His side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.  Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as My Father hath sent Me, even so send I you.  And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.

After the Apostles received the Holy Ghost, it is evident that they realized that Jesus had baptized them in the upper room.  You will NOT find a verse in the New Testament that says the Apostles washed anyone’s feet.  But there are many verses where the Apostles Baptized the Believers.

This is the ONLY verse that mentions washing feet other than Jesus speaking is in this verse,
1 Timothy 5:10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

Now you should clearly understand the reason Jesus washed the Apostles feet in the upper room before His death, they had to be cleansed before they received the Holy Ghost.

Mark 16:16 HE THAT BELIEVETH AND IS BAPTIZED SHALL BE SAVEDbut he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, REPENT, AND BE BAPTIZED everyone of you IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to Me.
