The Thief On The Cross

Spreading The Word Without Saying A Word Ministry
By: Chico and Debbie Jimenez

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation2 Peter 1:20

The thief  that died on the cross that Jesus said  “thou be with me in paradise” to has been misunderstood by many throughout the years because people do not study God’s Written Word in context. They listen to and believe what man teaches rather than reading and receiving revelation knowledge straight from the Holy Ghost.   1 Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, NOT in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

God’s Written Word is clear, we DO NOT need a man to teach us anything because the Holy Ghost is the ONE that teaches all things to all those of whom He indwells.   John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.  1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

The Word of God says this in 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

In order for one to study God’s Written Word in context, it is necessary to diligently search His Word.  Let us go back to the prophecy of Isaiah in chapter 53 concerning the death of Jesus on the cross.

  • Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

So we can clearly see that the prophet Isaiah foretold that Jesus would be numbered with the transgressors.

The authors of the four gospels also confirmed that Jesus did indeed die among the transgressors as prophesied in the Old Testament.  Mark 15:27-28 And with Him they crucify two thieves; the one on His right hand, and the other on His left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And He was numbered with the transgressors

  • Matthew 27:38 Then were there two thieves crucified with Him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
  •  John 19:18 Where they crucified Him, and two other with Him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
  • Luke 23:32-33 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with Him to be put to death.  And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Let us look closely at the following verses.   Luke 23:39-43 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on Him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and usBut the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.  And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Why would Jesus speak these words to a man that was caught in the transgression of thievery and had NOT been baptized unto salvation?

The malefactor said “Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.  And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.”  This man, the malefactor, BELIEVED GOD.   Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance definition for Righteousness:
1342. dikaios dik’-ah-yos from 1349; equitable (in character or act); by implication, innocent, holy (absolutely or relatively):–just, meet, right(-eous).

1343. dikaiosune dik-ah-yos-oo’-nay from 1342; equity (of character or act); specially (Christian) justification:–righteousness.

Look closely at these verses…

  • Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness
  • Genesis 15:6 And he {Abraham} believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.
  • Romans 4:9b for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
  • Romans 4:19-22 And being not weak in faith, he {Abraham} considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;  And being fully persuaded that, what He had promised, He was able also to perform.  And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness
  • James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Since Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness; there is NO REASON that Jesus would deny this man’s entry into heaven either.

  • Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
  • Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.
  • Ephesians 6:9b …knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with Him.

John 6:28 Then said they unto Him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.

This man, the thief was face to face with Jesus, he was…  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.  {Hebrews 12:2a}

One must understand that Jesus was still alive when He was speaking to the thief on the cross. NO ONE could be baptized into the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ until the death, burial and resurrection occurred.
Romans 6:3-4  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Two more things that I would like to point out. The book of Life was written before the foundation of the world and Jesus knew from the beginning who would believe not.

  • Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world
  • Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
  • John 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray  Him.

This should make it clear to all who Believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Him Crucified  the reason why “Thief on the Cross” was saved without being baptized.

God’s Written Word says that we MUST BE BAPTIZED in order to be saved, as a matter of fact, Jesus Himself said it in  Mark 16:16 HE THAT BELIEVETH AND IS BAPTIZED SHALL BE SAVED; but he that believeth not shall be damned.  The Words that Jesus spoke should be carved into the minds of all that proclaim that they believe the Gospel, yet the Words of Jesus Christ are ignored by most because his or her preacher said that baptism is merely a public profession of your faith; which couldn’t be further from the TRUTH.

Listening to man is dangerous to your eternal soul.  Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, WE OUGHT TO OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN.   Are you going to risk believing the lie that you DO NOT need to be baptized to be saved because of something a man taught you? I certainly hope NOT!!!

The correct way to be baptized is in the Name of Jesus Christ.  Just to be clear, this DOES NOT discount what Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.  Did you notice THE NAME OF?  The Word of God, Jesus Chirst said to baptize them in the ONE SINGULAR NAME, The Name of Jesus Christ.  God’s Written Word DID NOT say baptize in the titles the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, it says baptize them in the NAME of those three titles. Jesus Christ is that ONE NAME. 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and THESE THREE ARE ONE.

DO NOT be fooled into believing anything else.   Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
