The FIRST Covenant (Old Testament, “The Law”) was between God and the man Abraham, the SECOND Covenant (New Testament) is between God and Jesus (the Lamb of God). This covenant has nothing to do with man. Again, this covenant is (present tense) between God and Jesus.
When reading the “Bible” the indisputable “Word of God”, WE must understand who Jesus or any other character in the Bible is speaking to.
Jesus’ ministry was for the Jewish people only and He was speaking to the Jews only,
Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (The Jews) Romans 9:4 Who are Israelites (The Jews); to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
Romans 3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them (The Jews) were committed the oracles (the Law) of God.
Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Yes, in the New Testament, the Old Covenant was still in effect. Jesus was speaking to the Jewish people in the Four Gospels, because as long as Jesus had “not yet” been crucified “Grace by Faith had not yet come into effect for those who believed in Jesus”.
After His Death, Burial and Resurrection the New Covenant (between God and Jesus) came into effect.
Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 9:17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Hebrews8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances (The Law) that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
The Law (Ten Commandments) was for the Jewish people only. The Law was never meant for the Gentiles. The New Covenant of the New Testament didn’t go into effect until after Jesus died and rose again on the third day. Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 9:17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Hebrews 7:18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did (Jesus); by the which we draw nigh unto God. 7:22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
From that day forward, the Jewish people that accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are no longer under the Law, but under Grace by Faith. We as Gentiles were never under the Law, likewise when we accept Jesus Christ as “OUR Lord and Savior” we then live under Grace through Faith in Christ Jesus. Our Sin is as far as the East is from the West, in the Sea of Forgetfulness.
Many people get confused by the fact that Jesus said, “Turn the other cheek”, “If thy.
right hand offend thee, cut it off” etc. He was talking to the people that are under the
Law (the Jews), because they were under the Abrahamic Covenant (The Law). Jesus had
not yet died. Hebrews 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have
been sought for the second. 8:8 For finding fault with them, He saith, Behold, the days come, saith the
Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
What we must get into our Spirits, is that just because Jesus said it, doesn’t mean He said it to “US the Believer”!!
There are only two Commandments in the New Covenant (New Testament):
I John Chapter 3:23 And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
God’s Commandments are clear and to the point.
Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
1 John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
